WOMEN’S HEALTH ISSUES: We would like to thank our guest speaker Erin Ward, a Registered Nurse from the Northland District Health Board for talking about cervical screening, sexual health and information about breast screening. Erin is a spunky lady who made a serious topic fun and interesting. We will enjoy having her back one day.

RE-CAP of MAY 2009 - AGM
Wendy Naepflin finished her roll as Chairperson for the year and went out with a BANG or should I say Explosive Dynamite!!

If you were trying to avoid going to the typical, dull & dry AGM then you missed out on another great evening at WINGS.

Wendy made it fun with noise makers, slideshow, and a poem for each Executive Member.

Thank you to the 2008/2009 Executive Committee for making WINGS

We look forward in part two of India Night.

RE-CAP OF MARCH 2009 MEETING- VALERIE AND SABRINA graced us with their presence and opened our eyes to a beautiful place they call home. We saw photos, learned some facts, watched a dance and tasted delicious food all from Mauritius.

There were some really good items that night and a good chance to chit chat!!

RE-CAP OF DECEMBER 2008 MEETING - This was a fun meeting celebrating WINGS 2nd year anniversary and rehashing the past two years. We played the heads and tails game, exchanged a $5 wrapped gift and ate some delicious anniversary cake. It was a great atmosphere and we look forward to more years to more years to come.

RE-CAP OF NOVEMBER 2008 MEETING- This time we enjoyed a biscuit swap. Everyone brought in their favourite dessert with a recipe and went around the table picking different treats to fill their tray. If you like to bake then this meeting was a dream for you.

RE-CAP of October 2 008 Meeting- WINGS had a Clothing Swap Evening. This worked out to be a lot of fun and everyone went home happy. So much fun that we will definitely do this again in 6 months time. Everyone brought in their previously loved clothes and swop it for something different. Anything that was left over was donated to Salvation Army and Dress for Success.

RE-Cap of Sept 2008 Meeting-

Cassandra Moar returned to WINGS once again to give us a flax weaving demonstration. We had between 35-40 people and even with an assistant with her it was hard to help everyone but it was accomplished. Mostly everyone was able to make a basket. Cassandra is happy to do a workshop with a smaller scale of people.
She can be reached at 430 8137.

RAFFLE PRIZE:
We would like to thank Annie Rose Glass Bead Studio for the beautiful piece of jewellery donated for the raffle prize.

WINGS is always trying something different and we are open to suggestions for what people want to do. Not every meeting suits everybody. We now have a suggestion box at the meetings so you an sneak in your say.

This meeting we decided not to have a guest speaker so we could enjoy more time getting to know people. The room was buzzing that night and the food was as always delicious. Iryna from the Ukraine and Monika from Germany outdid themselves with a Ukrainian borsh, carrot salad and German cheesecake and a chocolate wafer biscuit.

RAFFLE PRIZE:
We would like to thank Alison Jeffs from Surplus Direct with their kind donation a $50 voucher from their shop. They sell everything and anything you can think of!!

RE-CAP of 5th of MARCH 2008

Shirley El Karout was our speaker for the evening. She explained to us why Muslim women conceal their bodies in public. According to some scholars, only the hands and face should be left uncovered (and some say the feet), while according to others the face should also be partially or fully covered. There is a range of opinions on this matter among the scholars and a wide range of personal interpretations and styles of dress among women.

This was a very interesting meeting and we learned a lot.

Shirley brought in some scarves as well and showed us how to dress like muslim women.

One person asked what should we do to make things easier for muslim women around Whangarei and Shirley replied " just say hi to them, smile, welcome them, or chat to them".

RE-CAP OF 6TH OF FEBRUARY 2008

Ani Fox graced us with her presence by helping us celebrate Waitangi
Day. This is a National holiday to celebrate the signing of the historically significant Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti O Waitangi) and it could not be covered in 2hours so we will invite Ani back to do a workshop and talk about the what Waitangi means to The Maori and the Pakeha.

We explored the significance of ‘place’; where each of us has come from and where we are now. …and what it has to do with the Treaty of Waitangi ?

Ani Fox, is a Maori woman, an excellent story teller, an educator, a woman of Northland (Tai Tokerau) who talks to Ruru. Ruru is the Maori word for Morepork. Day.

RE-CAP OF 5TH OF DECEMBER 2007

WINGS new logo on the cake

Well one year has passed and WINGS celebrated their First Year Anniversary. The first meeting we had 24 people and the numbers have been pretty consistent. Now we are averaging around 40 people at each meeting, always with new members and regulars returning when they can. Our email list is up to 170 and growing.

The word is getting out that there is a place to meet new people, learn about each others cultures, meet local kiwis, have a fun ladies night out, eat different food from a different country, and develop friendships.

Most people brought a $5 gift wrapped up and we did a gift exchange.

We also had a raffle draw which was a $20 dollar gift voucher from Mokaba and Liza's homemade chocolate chip cookies. Wendy Naepflin was the proud winner. It is our goal to have a raffle draw each month.

We dove into some cake baked by Kay Mears. Thank you Kay. It is an added bonus that Kay is a pastry chef by trade so our cake looked fabulous as you can see by the picture. It did break my heart to see Kay cut the cake into several pieces.. All that work! Never mind it was delicious.

Just look at the pleasure Kay has in cutting this cake!

We would like to thank you Ellen for all her hard work involved in helping WINGS advice, support, and countless other things. Her job with the Settlement Support is full on but she managed to make some time for WINGS. We can’t express our gratitude enough.

WINGS SPONSOR

Introducing: Joe den Enting Financial Services Joe den Enting specialises in identifying and meeting your real financial needs. From medical, income protection to living assurance; his tailor made plans will provide the financial security you and your family will need in severe trauma.

The most important question to ask yourself: Is your level of income and lifestyle sustainable under your current cover. It is time to compare what you have and what you could have. You may be surprised which needs you can cover within your budget.

Risk Insurance, explained Health Insurance, for your medical emergencies

The New Zealand health system will provide for public medical treatment. However, questions to ask your self: Is the hospital care good enough? Are the specialist treatments within financial reach? How long are the waiting lists? With adequate medical; You do not have to worry about these issues.

Income Protection,to maintain your current lifestyle

Between the ages of 30 and 65, 2 out of 5 people will be unable to work for 6 months or more due to sickness or as a result of an accident.

Most people get only 5 paid sick days a year, so long term sickness or disability poses a real threat to your financial well-being. Income protection provides a regular cheque while you're off work. If you own a business, disability cover can take care of debt repayments while you recover.

Trauma Cover, lump sum payment on diagnosis of a critical illness.4 out of 10 people will suffer a critical condition before the age of 65, and 80% of people who suffer a critical illness survive to 65.

Major trauma - such as heart attack or cancer - can destroy financial health in a moment. Unexpected expenses arrive in every shape and form. The road to recovery is often long and stressful, but the delivery of a lump sum payment helps to put normality back into life.Death Benefits &

Terminal Illness1 in 5 males and 1 in 8 females will die before they reach 65.

Loss of a key player or family member creates a prolonged agony when it also means death of an income. Smart thinking today can help to ensure ongoing quality of life for dependents.

* Also free mortgage broking facilities available.

NEW POSTINGS ****

BIG NEWS!!

For those of you who haven’t heard the news WINGS AND THE WHANGAREI MIGRANT CENTRE are sharing an office behind Salut on Bank St. next to Bill Huddleson’s office.

This is a temporary office until 2009 when a permanent centre will be chosen. The permanent centre will be a one stop shop where migrants can find out information that will suit their needs, hire rooms for cultural venues, language schools, and a place where people will feel connected by sharing their cultural backgrounds & traditions..

Volunteers will be needed with all aspects of the centre.

Anyone interested in finding out more information about the centre can contact WMC, call Sabrina 09 430 0571 or WINGS 09 430 3221.

Stay tune for more updates!
